HOMEWORK WEEK 5
Learn the different types of validation checks, which are used to check that data input is sensible and reasonable (validation does not check for accuracy of data input). Also, make sure that you understand why IT systems need to be RELIABLE.
Test your undestanding:
1) Go to socrative.com
2) Click on the Student Login button
3) Enter room number VUIX6AL3
TYPES OF VALIDATION
Format Check
to ensure characters are in correct order, such as in a postcode.
|
Range Check
to ensure data is between 2 numbers, such as > 0 and < 18.
|
Existence Check
to ensure data has been entered, such a password.
|
Data Type Check
to ensure that a number has been entered, rather than text.
|
Check Digit
to ensure numerical data has been successfully transferred over a network.
|
RELIABILITY - why do IT systems need to be reliable?
IT systems (e.g. used for traffic lights) need to be always available.
To give users confidence and trust in using the system.
|
To meet a specific customer need (e.g. to get paid on time!)
To make the data used in the system safe and secure.
|
To prevent system crashes.
|
Remember what is meant when a system is reliable
Consistent performance (no matter what the conditions it is working under, e.g. bad weather)
|
Robust (it is not prone to crashing)
|
Recovery systems are in place (if it does crash, it can recover – e.g. from using a backup, or using an alternative system which takes over, etc.)
